The short answer
A wedding dress deposit is the payment that places your order with the shop and the maker, and the order form or the shop’s written policy decides whether any of it comes back. Before you pay, read what the form says about refunds, cancelling, the balance and its due date, the delivery date, and what happens if the dress arrives late, in the wrong size or damaged.
Do you pay a deposit for a wedding dress?
An order for a dress that is made or ordered for you can start with a deposit: the shop places the order with the designer once it is paid, and the rest is due later. A dress bought off the rack, a sample or a style in stock may be paid in full on the day instead. Ask the shop which applies to the dress you chose, and what the deposit pays for: the order with the maker, the shop’s own fee, or both.
The deposit and the order form go together. The form is the agreement with the shop, even when it is a single page you sign at the counter, and its terms decide what the deposit means. A policy printed on the back, on a receipt or on the shop’s website can be part of it, so ask for a copy of each page you are asked to sign or accept, and keep it with your other vendor contracts.
What should a wedding dress order form say?
The order form is what you will compare the dress with when it arrives, so check that it names the dress exactly. Look for the designer, the style number, the size ordered and the measurements it was based on, the color and fabric, and any change ordered from the maker, such as a different neckline, added sleeves or extra length. A detail agreed at the appointment but missing from the form is harder to point to later.
Then read the money and the dates. The form should give the price, the deposit, the balance and the date it is due, the delivery date or window, and whether alterations are included or priced separately. The dress alterations guide covers fittings and timing once the dress arrives. If the form leaves any of these out, ask the shop to add it before you pay.
- Designer, style number and size ordered
- Measurements the size was based on
- Color, fabric and any changes ordered from the maker
- Price, deposit and balance with its due date
- Delivery date or window
- Whether alterations are included
- Refund, cancellation and exchange terms
- What happens if the dress is late, wrong or damaged
Is a wedding dress deposit refundable?
Whether a wedding dress deposit is refundable depends on the order form and the shop’s policy, and the wording matters. A form may call the deposit non-refundable, refundable until the order is placed with the maker, or usable as a store credit. It may treat a dress made to order differently from one in stock. Copy the exact sentence and where it appears, rather than relying on what you were told at the appointment.
Read the other side of the refund question too: what the shop owes you if it cannot deliver. Look for what the form says if the maker cancels the style, if the dress will not arrive by the delivery date, or if the shop closes. If the form says nothing, ask the shop in writing and keep the reply. Whether a term is enforceable where you live is a legal question; ask a lawyer if the amount is large and the wording unclear.
Can you cancel a wedding dress order?
You can ask to cancel at any time, but what you get back depends on the cancellation policy and on how far the order has gone. Before the shop places the order with the maker, there may be more room; once fabric is cut or the dress is made, the form may say the full price is owed. Read the cancellation terms before you pay, and note the date, if there is one, after which the terms change.
If you need to cancel, do it in writing, by email or the method the form names, and include your name, the order number, the style and the date you are cancelling. Ask the shop to confirm in writing what it will refund, if anything, and when. If the wedding is cancelled rather than just the dress, the cancellation letter guide covers telling each vendor in order.
- The cancellation sentence, copied word for word
- Any date after which the terms change
- How a cancellation must be sent
- What the shop will refund, confirmed in writing
- When the refund will be paid
Can you make payments on a wedding dress?
Some shops let you pay the balance in installments, some ask for it in full before the dress is released, and some offer financing through a separate lender. Ask which the shop offers and get the terms in writing: each amount, each due date, and what happens if a payment is late. A financing plan is a separate agreement with its own terms, so read it on its own before you sign.
Put the deposit, each installment and the final balance on your payment schedule with your other vendors, and keep the receipts. If the balance is due when the dress arrives, check whether the shop will hold the dress until it is paid, and for how long it will store it before charging or asking you to collect it.
Wedding dress rush fees, late delivery and the wrong size
If the delivery date the shop gives is too close to your wedding, ask what a rush order would change: the date it promises, what it costs and whether the maker confirms it in writing. Ask for the rush charge on the order form as its own line, with the delivery date it buys, so you can tell later whether that date was met.
Ask what the shop does if the dress arrives late, in a different size from the one ordered, in the wrong color or damaged. The form may offer a replacement, a credit, a refund or alterations at the shop’s cost, or it may say nothing. Check the dress against the order form as soon as it arrives, take photos of anything that does not match, and raise it with the shop in writing the same week.
- Rush charge as its own line, with the date it buys
- What happens if the dress is late
- What happens if the size, color or style is wrong
- What happens if it arrives damaged
- Who checks the dress against the form, and when

Common questions
Is a wedding dress deposit refundable?
A wedding dress deposit is refundable only if the order form or the shop’s written policy says so. It may be non-refundable, refundable until the order goes to the maker, or kept as store credit. Copy the exact wording before you pay, and ask the shop in writing about anything the form leaves out.
How much deposit do you need for a wedding dress?
The deposit for a wedding dress is set by each shop, and this guide does not give a figure. Ask the shop for the deposit, the balance and the date each is due, in writing on the order form, and add both to your payment schedule. Compare shops on the full price and the terms, not the deposit alone.
Can you cancel a wedding dress order?
You can ask to cancel a wedding dress order, but what comes back depends on the cancellation terms and how far the order has gone with the maker. Send the cancellation in writing with your order number, and ask the shop to confirm in writing what it will refund and when.
Can you make payments on a wedding dress?
Whether you can make payments on a wedding dress depends on the shop. Some take the balance in installments, some ask for it in full before the dress is released, and some offer financing through a separate lender. Get each amount and due date in writing, and read any financing agreement on its own.
What is a wedding dress rush fee?
A wedding dress rush fee is a charge for ordering a dress to arrive sooner than the standard delivery date. Ask what it costs, which delivery date it gives and whether the maker confirms that date, and have the charge and the date written on the order form as their own line.
What if my wedding dress arrives in the wrong size?
If your wedding dress arrives in a size other than the one on the order form, take photos, compare it with the form and tell the shop in writing straight away. What the shop then offers, such as a replacement, alterations or a credit, depends on its terms, which is why the size belongs on the form.
