How long does a wedding refund take after cancelling?

A refund due date worked out from your own contract, a record of when the clock started, and a follow-up plan if the date passes.

The short answer

How long a wedding refund takes depends on what your contract says about timing, if it says anything: look for a number of days, the event that starts the count, and how the money is returned. If the contract is silent, ask the vendor for a date in writing. Card dispute questions go to your card issuer, and questions about your rights to a qualified attorney licensed in your state.

Where does a wedding refund policy set the timing?

Timing may not sit in the cancellation section alone. Check that section, any clause about the vendor being unable to perform, any clause about events outside the control of either side, the postponement clause and the security deposit terms. Search the document for refund, return, reimburse, credit, within and days.

For each refund you are owed or expect, copy the sentence that sets the timing, with its page and section. Note the number of days, whether they are calendar or business days, what starts the count, how the money will be returned, and any deductions the clause allows before the refund is calculated. If the contract gives no timing, write that down too.

What starts the clock on a wedding refund?

Contracts can start the count from different events: the date the vendor receives your written notice, the date the vendor confirms the cancellation, the date the vendor rebooks your date, or the original event date. Some tie the refund to costs the vendor has already incurred, which may need to be worked out first. The start event can move the due date by weeks or months.

Record the date you sent notice, how you sent it, and the date the vendor received or acknowledged it. Ask the vendor to confirm in writing the amount they will refund, the start date they are using and the date you should expect the money. A written confirmation of those three things is the anchor for everything that follows.

When is a wedding refund due? A worked example

For example, a hypothetical contract says that amounts paid above what the vendor keeps will be refunded within 30 days after the vendor receives written notice. You paid $5,000, and the cancellation schedule lets the vendor keep $3,500, so the expected refund is $5,000 - $3,500 = $1,500.

You email notice on Monday, February 1, 2027, and the vendor replies on Tuesday, February 2 confirming receipt. Thirty calendar days after February 2 is Thursday, March 4, 2027. If the vendor counted from February 1 instead, it would be March 3. If the contract meant business days, the date would be later still. Put the date on your calendar, with a follow-up reminder the next day.

What if the contract does not say when a refund is paid?

Ask the vendor directly, in writing, when and how they will return the money, and ask them to confirm the amount. Keep the question short and specific so the reply gives you a date you can hold them to in your own records. If the reply gives a range, note the later end as your follow-up date.

Rules about refund timing when a contract is silent vary by state. If a significant amount is involved and the vendor does not give a date, a qualified attorney licensed in your state can tell you what applies to your situation.

What should I do if the refund date passes?

Write to the vendor the day after, citing the clause, the start date, the due date and the amount, and ask when the refund will be sent. Keep the tone factual. If there is no reply, send a second message to any other contact in the contract, and note each attempt in your log with its date.

If you paid by card, ask your card issuer how its dispute process works, what documents it needs and what time limits apply to your account; the issuer decides whether and how to act. For a check or bank transfer, ask your bank what options it has. For questions about your legal rights, speak with a qualified attorney licensed in your state.

How do I track a refund once the vendor sends it?

Ask the vendor for the date sent, the method and a reference, such as a card refund reference or a check number. Card refunds may take time to appear on a statement; ask your card issuer how long a refund of that kind can take to post. Mark the refund received only when it appears on a statement or clears.

If the vendor offers a credit toward a future date instead of a refund, that is a separate choice. Before accepting, ask for its terms in writing: the amount, the expiry date, whether it can be transferred, and what happens to it if the vendor cannot provide the service later.

A message you can make your own

Change the wording to suit you, fill in anything in brackets and keep the questions that apply. You decide what to send and send it yourself.

Following our written notice of cancellation sent on [date], could you confirm in writing the amount you will refund, how it was calculated under section [number] of our agreement, the date you are treating as the start of the refund period, and the date and method by which we should expect the refund? If any deduction applies, please list it with the clause it relies on. Thank you for confirming these details so we can keep accurate records.

Common questions

Is there a legal deadline for a wedding vendor to refund me?

A legal deadline for a wedding vendor refund, if one applies, depends on your state and your contract, and rules vary. Start with what your contract says about timing and what starts the count. For whether any other rule applies to your situation, speak with a qualified attorney licensed in your state and bring the contract and your notice.

Why is my wedding refund taking so long?

A wedding refund can take longer than expected when the contract starts the count from a later event, such as the vendor confirming the cancellation or rebooking the date, or when deductions have to be worked out first. Ask the vendor in writing for the start date it is using, the amount and the date it expects to send the money.

How many days does a refund take to go back into your account?

How many days a refund takes to reach your account depends on the method and on your card issuer or bank, so ask them how long a refund of that kind can take to post. Ask the vendor for the date the refund was sent and a reference number, so the issuer or bank can trace it if it does not appear.

Can I dispute a wedding charge with my card issuer?

Whether you can dispute a wedding charge is a question for your card issuer, so ask how its dispute process works, which documents it wants and what time limits apply to your account. The issuer decides whether and how to act. Keep your contract, cancellation notice, the vendor replies and your payment records ready.

Should I accept a credit instead of a refund?

Accepting a credit instead of a wedding refund is your decision. Ask for the credit terms in writing first, including the amount, the expiry date, whether it can be transferred to someone else, and what happens if the vendor later cannot provide the service. Compare those terms with the refund the contract describes before you agree.

What if the vendor refunds less than I expected?

When a wedding vendor refunds less than you expected, ask for an itemized calculation citing the clauses used, and compare it with the cancellation schedule and your payment records. Reply in writing with the specific figure you disagree with and the reason, and keep the exchange with your contract.
